What do you do....

Recently, I've been faced with some things that have brought me to my knees. For some, I have offered thanks, others, intense prayer. One thing I have realized though, is that my initial response must be the same, regardless of the circumstance or outcome. I must praise Him. So, I'm learning, what do you do when:

  • one of your dearest friends, before having breast surgery, comes out of the exam room and in excitement says, "Please pray... they can't find it!"? You praise Him.
  • that same friend has to have surgery anyway? You praise Him.
  • your 4 month old masters the art of crying? You praise Him.
  • that same 4 month old doesn't go poo for a week? You praise Him.
  • after 4 weeks of not eating and sleeping and not gaining any weight (and did I mention crying), your 4 month old takes his first 2 hour day time nap of his life and things seem to settle for the first time? You praise Him.
  • your oldest son professes faith in Jesus and wants to be baptized? You praise Him.
  • all of your friends and family show up to support your children? You praise Him.
  • work is hard, sleep is little and your mind craves the Hawaiian surf? You praise Him.

It's what we were created to do... "I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips." (Ps. 34:1) Be it a new day all shiny and full of promise, or the midnight of our lives when nothing seems right.... our response must be to praise. Sometimes it's really easy and other times I can barely squeak it out. However, I want more than anything, to be able to praise Him without even thinking... like breathing. Are you with me?
